Concept Building: Civic Enhancement Center, Year 2030

I was fortunate enough to be invited to participate in the 2018 Civic I/O Mayors' Summit at SXSW. The summit "immerses forward-thinking mayors from around the country with the most innovative technologists, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and creatives during SXSW." During the 3-day conference, mayors were teamed up with a futurist, a brainstormer, and an illustrator (that's me!) to create a poster reflecting a vision of 2030 for their city. My group, teamed with Mayor Christopher Cabaldon of West Sacramento, designed a Civic Enhancement Center, a central hub intended to bring citizens together to create, innovate, and take part in the growth of the city. I happen to be wildly interested in (perhaps obsessed with?) future-thought so this project was a thrill to work on.

With a bunch of futurists!

I began by plotting out the structure on a grid. This is the first time I've ever built the framework of a drawing digitally. I prefer doing it in pencil so I can distort the perspective as I need to, but as this structure was so precise and symmetrical, I decided a grid would be best.

Here is the rough draft, laying out the contents of each floor and beginning to play with colors and details.

This is the final illustration including descriptions of each portion of the building. It was so much fun to write this up since I think about this stuff all the time!
